PREPARED FOR ETERNITY
Lord of Outland. The Betrayer. The First Demon Hunter.
His sacrifice became legend. His legend became myth.
Illidan Stormrage is one of the most complex and compelling figures in the history of Azeroth. Born as a night elf, his insatiable hunger for arcane power and his forbidden use of dark magic led the night elves to imprison him for ten thousand years beneath Mount Hyjal.
Upon his release, Illidan embraced the demonic energies he had absorbed over millennia, undergoing a terrifying physical transformation — his eyes burned away and replaced by fel fire, his back torn asunder by great demonic wings, and the arcane tattoos across his body now channeling the raw power of the Fel.
Branded a Betrayer by his own people, cast out by those he sought to protect, Illidan fled to Outland — the shattered remnant of the world Draenor — where he ruled as the Lord of Outland from the Black Temple. Yet in truth, every dark act he committed served a singular obsession: to destroy the Burning Legion before it could consume all life in the universe.
"You are not prepared." — Illidan Stormrage
The defining moments of the Betrayer's eternal struggle
Illidan consumes the energies of the Demon Soul, transforming his eyes into orbs of fel fire and gaining tremendous power. He betrays the night elves to the Burning Legion — or so it appears — sacrificing everything in a desperate attempt to stop the invasion from within.
Tyrande Whisperwind frees Illidan from his ancient prison beneath Hyjal, seeking his power against the Burning Legion. Illidan consumes the skull of Gul'dan and completes his transformation into a half-demon, half-night-elf — a being of terrifying power, forever changed.
Captured by Arthas and forced to serve the Lich King, Illidan is tasked with destroying the Frozen Throne using the Eye of Sargeras. He is ultimately stopped by Maiev Shadowsong, the warden who had guarded him for millennia, but escapes to Outland with his naga and blood elf allies.
From his fortress at the Black Temple in Shadowmoon Valley, Illidan rules Outland and wages endless war against the demon armies of Magtheridon. Heroes of Azeroth invade the Black Temple and defeat him — but it is not the end. Death, for Illidan Stormrage, is only the beginning.
Illidan's soul is resurrected by Xe'ra and the Army of the Light. Leading the Demon Hunters of the Illidari, he confronts Sargeras himself in a final, cataclysmic battle to save all existence. At last, the truth is revealed: Illidan was never the villain. He was always the one who was prepared.

The fearsome arsenal of the world's most powerful Demon Hunter
Illidan transforms into his pure demon form, his power magnified beyond mortal comprehension. Wings tear from his back, his body surges with fel energy, and his already devastating combat prowess becomes something that defies all challenge.
A raging aura of fel fire erupts from Illidan's body, engulfing all enemies who dare approach in searing demonic flame. The aura burns unceasingly — a constant testament to the demonic power that flows through every vein of his transformed body.
Forged from the weapons of the pit lord Azzinoth, these twin blades are among the most powerful weapons in existence. Illidan wields them with terrifying speed and precision, channeling fel energy through their ancient forms to cleave through even the most powerful demonic armor.
Though blinded in the physical sense — his eyes burned away and replaced by windows of pure fel fire — Illidan perceives reality on a level beyond mortal comprehension. He sees the fel energy in all living things, sees through deception and illusion, and perceives threats invisible to any other being.
The truth behind the Betrayer's eternal sacrifice
At the heart of Shadowmoon Valley stood the Black Temple — once a holy draenei sanctum called Karabor, now a fortress of shadow and fel fire. Here Illidan sat upon his throne, neither fully demon nor fully night elf, an outcast from every world. He had conquered Outland, defeated the pit lord Magtheridon, and commanded armies of naga and blood elves loyal to his cause.
But the heroes of Azeroth came for him. Led by shining idealists who could not see past the surface of his terrible acts, they stormed the Black Temple and brought him low. As his body faded, Maiev Shadowsong — his ancient captor — delivered the final blow and spoke words she would regret: "It is over, Illidan. You are beaten."
When Illidan consumed the Skull of Gul'dan, he made a choice that no other being had ever made willingly: he invited demonic corruption into his soul and wrestled for control. His body tore itself apart and reformed — wings, horns, fel fire replacing his eyes — but his will remained. He became something new: the first true Demon Hunter, a predator of demons.
The Demon Hunter path he pioneered became a legacy. After his death at the Black Temple, his followers — the Illidari — carried forward his methods. In Legion, when the Burning Legion returned in full force, it was Demon Hunters who stood at the vanguard, and it was Illidan himself, resurrected, who led them to final victory against the Dark Titan Sargeras.
